With sparkling waters teeming with vibrant marine life, Grand Cayman is the perfect place to learn to dive. The resort course, offered at most dive operations, is ideal for beginners. It typically takes two and a half hours (divided into classroom theory and pool time) for basic dive skills, including one open water dive to a depth of no more than 40 feet. The cost is around $150 and divers are provided with all necessary gear. No diver certification is necessary to take this course.
The Open Water Certification course is offered by most dive shops and resorts and usually takes three days (four dives) to complete. There is an option to complete the theory portion of the course online at padi.com prior to your arrival, which will shorten the course length. Trainee divers have to pass a theory test and must be in reasonable shape to be certified. Charges for the Open Water certification vary but average $500 to $600.
Refresher courses (for those divers who have already completed their PADI Open Water certification but have not dived within two years) generally cost around $150 and take just one morning to complete, with an open water dive in the afternoon.
