A castle of culture Discover the unique culture of the Cayman Islands at picturesque Pedro St James.
Located just 20 minutes from George Town, Pedro St James sits on seven landscaped acres by the sea. The beautiful old building, known as Pedro Castle, recalls the islands’ tumultuous past, with commanding views to the coastline.
In the 1990s, the Cayman Islands Government purchased Pedro St James and painstakingly restored the house to its 18th century glory. Today, visitors can stroll through the imposing edifice, which features period furniture and authentic artifacts, to experience what life in Cayman was like many centuries ago.
Built in 1780, the historic site is the oldest stone structure in the Cayman Islands and was built by mariner, plantation owner and early settler, William Eden. Over the years, the property has served as an inn, a family home, and a bar and restaurant. Most notably, it was the site of a meeting on 5 December, 1831, which resolved that elections would be held for the purpose of forming local laws. It is the birthplace of democracy in the Cayman Islands.
Pedro St James is now one of Cayman’s most beloved heritage tourism attractions. The restoration of the house is based on archive and architectural research and every detail reflects authentic building techniques, colours and furnishings.
As well as the house, gardens and beautiful courtyard, there is a multimedia theatre that showcases a 3D presentation about the property and 200 years of Caymanian history. At Pedro St James, the past, present and future are all in one place.
