Fishing
The clear blue seas and healthy coral reefs that surround the Cayman Islands attract an abundance of fish of all types. All three islands offer a variety of fishing opportunities for novices and experienced fishermen, including reef fishing, flats fishing and deep sea fishing. Reef fishing or bottom fishing is an activity the whole family can take part in from the comfort of a chartered boat. Night fishing trips can also be arranged with a local guide. Excellent deep sea fishing opportunities exist as little as a quarter-mile offshore, meaning you have more time to fish. Tuna, mahi mahi, wahoo and small marlin can be caught at different times of year. Barkers National Park and Little Cayman offer good bonefishing and flat fishing opportunities.
Jet Skiing
Jet-skis and wave runners can be hired from various locations and some companies will deliver them right to your hotel, if it is on the beach. With top speeds of 50m/ph, riding these aquatic bikes is exhilarating, plus they give you access to areas of coastline you would not otherwise be able to reach. Jet-ski safaris, with scheduled snorkel stops, are an interesting way to explore Cayman’s waters. Other excursions cross North Sound to visit the stingrays, take in a beach bar or even go fishing. Jet skis can hold up to three people, making it a fun day out for the family. For those who are who prefer to watch, there are jet-ski races scheduled throughout the year.
Kayaking
It doesn’t get much more peaceful than paddling along the shoreline under your own steam. No engine noise, no exhaust fumes, and a little gentle exercise. Paddle up and down Seven Mile Beach or take a guided tour along the south coast. With no noise from a motor, wildlife is not scared away so kayaking can be a great way to get up close and personal with indigenous fauna. Tours through the mangroves are also fascinating and a great insight into this unique ecosystem. On darker nights, kayaks are the only means to explore the bioluminescent bay at Cayman Kai. A visit to this sheltered cove, where concentrations of bioluminescent plankton are so high the water appears to glow, is magical.
