The Mission House is a historic site situated in Bodden Town
which has over the years been home to many influential families. This gorgeous
traditional two story home is situated in an area of both dry and wet land,
meaning a supply of waterfowl and fresh water which was vital for early
settlers in the 1700s. Over the centuries it had been home to missionaries,
teachers and families and the house is now a museum which recreates faithfully
the living conditions of three families who are known to have owned the home.
Guided tours of the living, dining, bathing and bedroom areas show actual
artifacts owned by one of the families who lived there for 77 years – the
Watlers. Indeed, the tour shows the challenges and difficulties faced and
overcome by early missionaries and teachers in the Cayman Islands. There’s a
display from the National Museum plus a store selling toys, refreshments and
locally-made craft pieces.
The Mission House is a large part of Caymanian history and
shows a real window into the past. As well as the house, the surrounding
thicket contains air plants, five species of bromeliads and Spanish Moss. The
pond attracts a variety of birds, water fowl and freshwater turtles.
Open Monday to Friday from 9am to 1pm with the last tour at
midday.
