North Sound Golf Club has a special
place on the Cayman Islands golf scene.
Formerly called The Links at
Safehaven, it is Cayman’s only 18-hole championship golf course. It can stage
large tournaments such as the region’s biggest competition: the Caribbean Amateur
Golf Championship.
The par-71 public course was designed
by Englishman Roy Case in 1994 and built in the style of a traditional Scottish
links course. North Sound stretches 6,605 yards and offers a number of white sand
bunkers and water holes. There are also manicured fairways edged by palm trees
and generously proportioned greens that sport numerous sunbathing iguanas.
At the helm of North Sound is
Director of Golf Jason Deerwester. The lifelong golfer attended the San Diego
Golf Academy for a degree in golf operations before travelling four years
around the world teaching golf. After another four years in Seattle, where he
earned his Class A PGA membership, Deerwester came to Cayman last year.
The current rates are US$195 (non-resident)
and US$160 (resident). The twilight golf rate is US$55. Club rentals are US$50.
There are discounted rates for
several hotels with 195 registered members who pay yearly membership dues and a
cart fee each time they play.
North Sound also has Cayman’s only
driving range and practice facility. The range can be used for US$12
(which includes 50 balls) and $18 (which includes 100 balls).
